Transferring number plates is a very straightforward process- no more complicated than transferring ownership of a car using the V5C document.

For many, number plate transfer is somewhat of a mystery and a taboo- the DVLA do explain clearly on the reverse of their documents on how to transfer a number plate- but here we briefly outline what you need to know.

How to transfer a number plate

This is very simple indeed and no worse than completing the V5 logbook when buying or selling a car.

Transfer a number plate from vehicle to vehicle

If the number plate you want to transfer is currently on a car and you want to transfer it to another car- you can do so with Form V317 from the DVLA

Transfer a number plate from vehicle to retention

If the number plate you want to transfer is currently on a car and you want to transfer it to retention (retaining the number plate) - you can do so with Form V778/1 from the DVLA

If the number plate you want to transfer is currently on retention and you want to transfer it to a car (assigning the number plate) - you can do so with the retention documents V750 or V778.

How long does it take to transfer a number plate?

The DVLA quote up to 4 weeks for retaining, assigning or transferring a number plate. From our experience it can take on average 10 - 12 working days to complete the process by post.

You can visit your local DVLA office and complete most transfers same day in person.
